Although I havnt tryed it I seem to remember a fella on nuge board who used .17 hmr for hunting hogs. I did have a savage in that round and the hollowpoints really tore stuff up. but they are very lightweight bullets.

This one's even bigger than the guy I caught last week. There's a large spotted boar that I've caught on the gamecams near the corral trap, but that's 3/4 mile away from where I caught this guy so it might be a different one. This is the 94th hog I've trapped or shot this year, and that doesn't include ones I've shot and not recovered.

Happy Easter!
Shot one at first light. The rest took off and so I didn't even attempt another shot.
Caught 2 choates in the small box trap. They'll be good eating. The bigger pigs usually don't go into this trap. I assume its because of the size and it's got a bottom.
The first big box trap catches another big boar. I thought I overbuilt it but he's really testing it. I'm glad I built it as strong and heavy as I did now.
This makes 46 hogs so far this year.

Something different. I've got a border collie, Charlie, and he's a fetching machine. The steers are REALLY curious to what this dog is doing. It's almost if they want to try playing fetch too.

Last weekend on Sunday morning the rains came. I got some wet, muddy pigs. There was also one in the corral trap but he climbed out (again!) before I got there.

The hogs are doing some incredible damage. We had cows grazing all winder long on about 300 acres, 104 of which is barley. With the rains they didn't need that much so we took them off about 20 acres so it could mature. The intent was to combine the grain for certified seed. As it headed out the hogs started hammering it so my farmer cut and baled it. We had 59 rolls of prime barley hay; almost no weeds and it had zero herbicide or pesticide for the last 3 years so you could argue that it was organic. (Not certified, but enough to get more money for it.) Well he left the rolls in the field like he normally does and the hogs started hammering them. Memorial day morning there were probably 60 hogs in the one field. By that time every bale had been touched and 2 were completely tore apart. 5 days later there were about 15 ruined.
